A summary of the basic rules of golf

So you want to start playing golf and grasp a better understanding of the basic rules?   Read on and learn about the fundamental rules of the golf.

The game of golf has 25 rules in total, which are set out in the R&A Rule Book - cup of tea time if you want to read them.

We have distilled the fundamental rules into a list below to help you quickly grasp the basics and get out playing on your local course.

**Objective**

The aim is to complete each hole in as few strokes as possible. A standard round consists of 18 holes.

**Equipment**

Players use a variety of clubs to hit a ball from the teeing ground into the hole on the green.  The maximum number of clubs you are allowed to bring with you is 14.

 **Teeing Off**

Play starts on each hole from the teeing ground. The ball must be teed up and hit within the designated tee box area.  There can be various markers on tee boxes, but the scorecard will help guide you.

 **Playing the Ball**

The rules of golf state that a ball must be played as it lies.  This means you cannot move it or alter the environment around it. The only exceptions are when the rules specifically allow relief (like from hazards or abnormal ground conditions).

 **Order of Play**

The player farthest from the hole typically plays first. On the teeing ground of a new hole, the player with the lowest score on the previous hole goes first (this is called "the honour").

 **The Green**

Once the ball reaches the green, players use a putter to putt the ball into the hole. The ball should be marked and lifted if it interferes with another player's line of play.  We have a ball marker to help you with that.

 **Scoring**

Scores are recorded in strokes, with the less strokes played the better your score. Each hole has a "par" score, representing the number of strokes a skilled golfer should take to complete the hole. Shorter holes tend to be designated as a Par3, which means 3 shots to make Par.  Scoring terms include:

  • Par - Completing a hole in the designated number of strokes (e.g. 3 shots at a Par3).
  • Birdie - One stroke under par (e.g. 3 shots at Par4).
  • Eagle - Two strokes under par (e.g 3 shorts at Par5).
  • Bogey - One stroke over par (e.g. 5 shots at Par4).
  • Double Bogey - Two strokes over par (e.g. 5 shots at Par3).

**Penalties**

Players can incur penalty strokes for various infractions, as a result of hitting the ball out of bounds, or into a water hazard, or not following proper rules. Common penalties include:

  • Out of Bounds - A one-stroke penalty and the ball must be replayed from the original spot.
  • Water Hazards - A one-stroke penalty with options for relief based on the type of hazard.

 **Etiquette**

Golf has a strong tradition of etiquette, which includes playing at a good pace, taking care of the course (like repairing divots), and showing respect to other players.  You may find that a dress code needs to be observed on the course and inside the club house.

Enjoy your golf!
